Volleyball drops senior night matches; men’s, women’s basketball open season with wins – this week in sports 11/9

Volleyball:

The Rams traveled home for a two-game weekend series against 18th ranked University of Dayton In both contests, Rhode Island lost 3-0, getting swept by the leading team in the Atlantic 10. Friday was senior night for the Rams, as Samantha Blahut, Maddie Norris and Gabrielle Shilling were honored before the match. During the match, Dayton went on multiple runs scoring four points or higher, making it difficult for the Rams to gain any momentum. First-year outside hitter Megan Disu led Rhode Island with seven kills, one kill shy of tying her career high. Saturday’s home finale delivered a similar outcome, as Dayton went on multiple runs to complete the series sweep. The Flyers recorded 11 aces overall, never trailing at any point in the match. Men’s Basketball:

FINAL (11/6): URI 81-70 Central Connecticut

The Rams opened their season off with a victory at The Ryan Center. After falling behind 7-2 early in the first quarter, URI went on a 10-0 run, never trailing in the game after that point. Women’s Basketball:

FINAL (11/6): URI 91-40 Sacred Heart

URI started their season off with a significant victory against Sacred Heart University at The Ryan Center. Overall, the Rams played a well-balanced game, as the team recorded 22 assists, scoring 54 points in the paint and not giving up any points after turnovers.
