Tennis bounces back, track honors seniors

Men’s Basketball:

FINAL (2/11): UMass 81-79 URI

Following a win against the George Washington University Revolutionaries on Tuesday, Feb. 6. Following their win, the University of Rhode Island Rams went on the road to take on the University of Massachusetts Minutemen on Sunday. The Rams fell short in a hard fought game in the Mullins Center. After scoring 88 on Tuesday and 79 on Sunday, the offense for Rhode Island showed improvement. The next game for the Rams will be at the Ryan Center on Sunday, as they face off against Loyola University Chicago. For more on the game, see David Okula’s recap (page 11, rhodycigar.com).

Women’s Basketball:

FINAL (2/11): Saint Louis 76-73 URI

FINAL (2/14) URI 86-64 UMass

On Sunday, the Rams hosted Saint Louis University, which resulted in a loss for Rhode Island. SLU scored 24 of their points off of a season-high 25 Rhody turnovers. Despite the 35-28 lead at halftime, Rhode Island couldn’t come up with the win at home. The Rams had six players who scored 10 or more points. On Wednesday, Rhode Island traveled to Massachusetts to play the Minutewomen in a 22 point victory. The Rams were able to shoot 52% from the field, allowing their offense to roll through. Men’s Track and Field:

URI Coaches Invite (2/10)

Boston University Valentine Invite (2/10)

The Rams had their athletes split up to attend the BU Valentine Invite while hosting the URI Coaches Invite on Saturday. In the Mackal Field House at the Coaches Invite, Rhode Island won all of the field events. Fourth-year Chris Tavarone won first place in shot put from throwing 56’ 2.75“. Fourth-year Kai Schmidt-Bilowith achieved first place in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.21 seconds. The fourth-year athletes are honored before the meet since it is their last meet at Mackal. For the BU Valentine Invite, third-year Jarett Young placed fifth in the 200 meter race. The Rams had a busy weekend and will travel up to Providence for the Brown University Invitational. David Hemery Valentine Invitational (2/9)

URI Coaches Invite (2/10)

The Rams competed in the Boston University Invitational on Friday. Fourth-year distance runner Molly Sabia recorded her personal best, finishing the 3000 meter at 10:07.44. Another notable mention is third-year Sofia Piccone, who recorded her personal best with a time of 5:05.92. Going into the URI Coaches Invitational, 10 fourth-year athletes for Rhode Island were honored before the event. The Rams won two individual events with the help of second-year Jacqueline Edoro on the triple jump and second-year Olivia Skapczynski on the 1000 meter. Tennis:

Final (2/11): URI 7-0 Stonehill

On Sunday, the Rams hosted the Skyhawks at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and swept them by winning every match. In top-ranked singles, second-year Sophie Herrman defeated Anneliese Beltran 6-0, 6-0. The three doubles matches for the Rams allowed only two total games.
