Tennis sweeps Stonehill in bounce back win

The University of Rhode Island’s women’s tennis team took on Stonehill College over the weekend, defeating them 7-0 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.

On Sunday, Rhode Island achieved winning scores in six singles matches and three doubles matches, making it a 7-0 sweep over the visitors.

“We just have to get better every single day,” URI Head Coach Jonas Brobeck said. “We’re on the right track, there is nothing in particular that stands out that this person needs to do, we go into work every single day.”

The action started when URI fourth-year Valentina Cvackoba faced off against Stonehill’s first-year Alice Brito do Rio, winning 6-1,4-0, where Cvackoba won it through an early default in the second set.

In the following singles match, URI’s fifth-year Nadia Rajan faced off against Stonehill’s first-year Madison Warren. The final score was 7-5, 6-1, with Rajan taking the victory. Rajan was in a deficit during the first set but battled back to take the win.

“I got my confidence back and was able to win the set,” Rajan said. “[I] didn’t doubt myself…I know I can do this…I know I can get this done.”

Rajan also played a doubles match with second-year Nikki Fernando, facing off against second-year Camilia Zuluaga Rodriguez and Brito do Rio. They came away with a 6-1 win.

“There is always room for improvement,” Brobeck said. “[It’s about] getting better on a couple of things on the doubles courts and clean[ing] up some things on the single courts.”

The rest of the singles matches and double matches were all won by Rhode Island.

In the rest of the double games, Rhody continued their winning ways, defeating all three Stonehill pairings. Following Rajan and Fernando’s match, Cvackova and second-year Sophie Herrman took on second-year Anneliese Beltran and Warren, defeating them by a score of 6-1.

In the third match, URI’s first-year Steph Hylton and second-year Ava Grnja faced off Stonehill’s third-years Marissa Such and Jenna Gustafson, sweeping them 6-0.

After their 7-0 sweep of the Skyhawks, Rhode Island improved their record to 2-2. The Rams next take on Providence College at home on Friday in Newport, Rhode Island before traveling to Hamden, Connecticut to face off against Quinnipiac University on Sunday.
