Underground, up-and-coming, underappreciated: Katrina Stuart

Originally born in Toronto, Canada, pop artist Katrina Stuart has been pursuing her love for music in Los Angeles where she has amassed 33,613 monthly listeners on Spotify.

In 2017, Stuart released her first single “All In,” which featured Teddy Marquee. The song also had a video that featured Stuart’s now ex-boyfriend, youtuber Sam Golbach. The song has classic pop elements that have stuck with Stuart for the continuation of her music career. In 2018, she went on to release four more singles, including a Christmas song titled “Magical Christmas.”

On Sept. 14, 2019, Stuart released the single “Blue Roses,” which would be featured on her album “Under My Skin” two months later. Following the release, Stuart also filmed a music video for the song.

“Under My Skin” is a melodic pop album that has 10 tracks. Other singles from this album include “Dinner” and “Gone,” both of which received music videos. The album carries listeners through Stuart’s experiences with love, longing and heartbreak. The most popular song on Spotify from the album is “Gone” with almost 2.5 million streams. This is also Stuart’s most streamed song on Spotify.

Following the release of “Under My Skin,” Stuart spent the next few years releasing singles and music videos, the first of which was “In My Veins,” which was released in 2020 and had a music video. While “Under My Skin” overall had a more melodic tone to it, especially on tracks such as “Attraction,” “In My Veins” played more into Stuart’s electric-pop sound. In 2021, Stuart released another single titled “So Screwed,” which also played into her fast-paced pop style.

In 2022, Stuart released her single “Easy.” This track went back to more of the melodic elements featured in “Under My Skin.” This is one of Stuart’s most powerful tracks as it explores the concept of addiction and how it is easier to let someone go than give up an addiction. Stuart used this track to explore a past relationship where she was the one let go and she had to make peace with it.

Also in 2022, Stuart released the single “Karma,” which would later become the opening track on her album “Honestly,” released in October 2022. The album features 10 tracks, only one of which received a music video.

“I chose this name for the album because it has been three years since my last album and I feel like I haven’t been able to say what I’ve been wanting to say in the past three years,” Stuart said in a YouTube video titled “let’s talk honestly…,” released Oct. 22, 2022.

Her goal with the album was to explore her emotions on a deeper level and express them through the songs on the album, Stuart said in the YouTube video. One track on the album where this goal is evident is “Used but Used to it.” The track explores Stuart’s experiences with dealing with the difficulties of navigating the music industry and her friendships while living in Los Angeles.

Since the release of “Honestly,” Stuart has released four singles, all of which include music videos. Her most recent single is the song “Poker Player.” At the moment, there are no indications that Stuart has any new songs or tours planned to be announced. Aside from her music career, Stuart has been consistently uploading to her self-titled YouTube channel.
