Tennis wins sixth straight, baseball continues to struggle, basketball season concludes

Women’s Tennis

FINAL (3/2): URI 5-2 Stony Brook

FINAL (3/3): URI 6-1 Hofstra

The University of Rhode Island women’s tennis team kept their win streak going over the weekend, picking up a 5-2 win over Stony Brook University on Saturday and a 6-1 win over Hofstra University on Sunday. They have now won six in a row and have a 7-2 record on the season. They will look to push the win streak to seven with a match versus Georgetown University on Tuesday. Men’s Basketball

FINAL (3/2): Saint Louis 94-91 URI

FINAL (3/6): George Mason 69 – 51 URI

The URI men’s basketball team took on Saint Louis University at the Ryan Center on Saturday. The Rams had four players in double figures: Third-year David Green led the scoring for URI with 21 points, fourth-year Luis Kortright was right behind him with 20 points. Fourth-year players Jaden House and third-year Zek Montgomery also had strong contributions – House finished with 14 points and Montgomery had 11. However, it wasn’t enough to earn the win as URI fell just short, 94-91. On Wednesday the Rams fell to George Mason University by a score of 69-51 in Rhody’s final home game. Women’s Basketball

FINAL (3/2): URI 77-42 Dayton

The URI women’s basketball team was able to get back in the win column on Saturday, closing out their regular season with a 77-42 win over Dayton University. URI started the game off strong and never looked back, outscoring Dayton 16-6 in the first quarter. It was all Rhody for the rest of the game, holding the Flyers to under 15 points in each quarter. Fifth-year Dee Dee Davis was the leading scorer with 16 points. They will look to build off their winning performance and carry it into their first A-10 tournament game on Thursday. Men’s Track and Field

First place: IC4A Championship (3/1-3/3)

First place: New England Championship (3/1-3/2)

URI m en’s track and field looked to keep their championship momentum going coming off their fourth-straight indoor track A-10 championship victory last weekend. They did just that, as they won their second consecutive New England Indoor Championship by scoring 121 points. This gave them a 36-point margin of victory over Southern Connecticut State University, who came in second place with 85 points. They also won the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America championship for the first time in program history. They did it in convincing fashion, with a 57.5 point gap between the Rams and second place Stony Brook.

URI had four champions in the IC4A meet. Fifth-year Collin Ochs ran a school record 1.48.46 to become the 800 meter champion. Third-year Ryan Tona was the heptathlon champion, collecting 5460 points. Fourth-year Tristen Howard won the IC4A 60 meter with a time of 6.78 seconds. Fourth-year Chris Tavarone took home the crown for shot put, posting a mark of 55 feet and 4.75 inches. Women’s Track and Field

Second place: ECAC Championship (3/1-3/3)

URI women’s track and field finished in second place in the New England Indoor Championship over the weekend, scoring 113 points. Second-year Jacqueline Edoro won the triple jump with a mark of 38’ 1 1/4”. Fourth-year Elise LePage secured the 800 meter with a time of 2:13.89. Fifth-year Erynn Field finished sixth in the weight throw putting up a mark of 52’10”. The Rams also had members of the team compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship. Fourth-year Megan Wood took home silver in the weight throw, posting a personal best of 47’ 1”. A-10 women’s 800 meter champion Second-year Lily Saul also competed in the ECAC championship and came in second at the ECAC 800 meter, only 0.03 seconds away from winning the race.

Baseball

FINAL (3/2): Washington State 10-4 URI (Game 1)

FINAL (3/2): Washington State 17-7 URI (Game 2)

FINAL (3/3): URI 6-3 Washington State

After dropping both games of a doubleheader on Saturday vs the Cougars, URI baseball bounced back to close the series out with a 6-3 win. With the final game tied at three runs each going into the top of the ninth inning, Rhody scored three runs. Third-year Eric Genther hit a single to drive in a run, and third-year Brody McKenzie hit his first home run to give them the lead and secure the win. Redshirt first-year Evan Maloney got the start, striking out five batters over five innings of work and giving up three earned runs. Sixth-year Tommy Hughes, fifth-year Zach Fernandez and second-year Colin Maloney held down on the mound for the rest of the game, shutting the Cougars out the rest of the way.
