Rowing opens season, baseball falls in fourth straight loss – This Week in Sports 4/4

Softball:

Despite having a two-run lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, The University of Rhode Island softball team fell to Saint Joseph’s 7 – 4 on Friday. Fifth-year Cassie Swenson crossed home plate three times on the day, with fifth-year Sydney Yoder scoring the other run. Second-year Emily Power also had three runs-batted-in (RBI) in the team’s loss.

In their second game of the double-header, URI rallied down 4-0 in the third and fourth innings to tie the game 4-4. This was short lived though, as Saint Joseph’s turned up the heat, scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking the game 11-4. Second-year Hannah Hernandez shined in the two-game split, getting a single in both games and extending her hitting streak to eight games.

In their final game of the series, URI would lose 8-5 on Saturday. The Rams were down 6-0 heading into the sixth inning, where they would rattle off five runs to bring the game within one run. The Hawks then regained control of the game and finished on top. Fifth-year Cassie Swenson recorded her 304th career assist, tying her with Courtney Prendergast (2009-13) for the most in program history. She also scored twice in this matchup. Baseball:

FINAL 03/28: Saint Louis University 3 – 2 URI

FINAL 03/29: Saint Louis University 8 – 1 URI

FINAL 03/30: Saint Louis University 7 – 3 URI

In their series opener on Thursday, URI would be walked off in the ninth inning and lose with a final score of 3-2. The Rams held the lead on two separate occasions, but were unable to walk away with the win. Fifth-year pitcher Zach Fernandez was tagged with the loss. He relieved fifth-year pitcher Kenny Heon to start the ninth.

The team then lost 8-1 on Friday. The game was within reach, as the Rams were only down 4-1 heading into the eighth inning, but a four-run performance in the bottom of the inning from the Billikens would ultimately put this game out of reach. The Rams’ batting struggles is what did them in, only tallying seven hits on the day. Fifth-year pitcher Sean Sposato was credited with the loss.

The final game of the series on Saturday would see the Rams trailing the entirety of the contest, losing 7-3 and making their record on the season 5-16. For more on the series visit David Okula’s recap (page 13, rhodycigar.com)

Golf:

Cutter Creek Invitational – 13th of 15

The University of Rhode Island men’s golf team competed at the Cutter Creek Invitational on Sunday and finished 13th out of 15 teams. Tennis:

FINAL 03/29: Davidson College 6 – 1 URI

The women’s tennis team moved to a record of 10-4 after losing their second straight match to Davidson on Saturday. Fifth-year Nadia Rajan provided Rhody’s lone point of the day in her singles matchup. The team competes next against Bryant University on Thursday. Track and Field: Bryant Black and Gold Invitational

Men’s: 7th of 15

Women’s: 4th of 15

Both the men’s and women’s track and field team sent members of their teams to compete at both the Texas Relays Decathlon and the Raleigh Relays over the weekend before the Bryant Black and Gold invitational, where they finished seventh and fourth out of 15 respectively. Rowing:

The women’s rowing team competed at the Doc Hosea Invitational on Saturday morning. The Varsity 4+ lineup of second-years Evelyn Tabor, Cait Reardon, Abby Galayda, Emma Larsh, and fourth-year Alexis Moore highlighted their showing as the only URI boat to reach a grand final, where they finished sixth (8:01.11).
