FINAL (9/20): University of Rhode Island 28-7 Long Island University

After being held without a touchdown in their prior matchup against the College of the Holy Cross, the Rams put up four of them against LIU on Saturday, with all facets of the team contributing in major ways in a Homecoming victory.

In the first quarter, fourth-year Rhody cornerback Justin Carcel, who was named Coastal Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, intercepted two passes from LIU’s third-year quarterback Chris Howell. URI was able to capitalize on one of those, as fourth-year Devin Farrell threw it to fellow fourth-year Aboraa Kwarteng in the end zone for a touchdown.

It was all URI in the second half as it held the Sharks scoreless and added on two more rushing touchdowns by Farrell and fifth-year running back Antwain Littleton Jr. to reach the final score of 28-7. For more, read Abby LePage’s article (page 12, rhodycigar.com).

Men’s Soccer

FINAL (9/20): Loyola University of Chicago 2-1 URI

FINAL (9/23): Holy Cross 3-2 URI

URI men’s soccer dropped both of its games this week as it extended its winless streak to four games, matching its longest of the season.

With the Rams and Ramblers tied at 1-1 on Saturday, Loyola ended the deadlock in the 83rd minute as second-year Luka Ivancic put one in the back of the net to give the Ramblers the lead and eventual win.

The Rams got the scoring started early against Holy Cross on Tuesday as second-year Tim Huhnholz scored off a cross from third-year Tiago Barriguinha in the fifth minute. Holy Cross answered six minutes later when first-year Liam Heneghan put his shot in the back of the net.

After the teams traded goals once again, Holy Cross took its first lead of the game off of a goal from first-year Jack Fiedler in the 83rd minute to secure the 3-2 victory, handing Rhody its third straight loss. For more, read Abby LePage’s article (page 10, rhodycigar.com).

Women’s Soccer

FINAL (9/20): URI 1-0 Saint Joseph’s University

Rhody secured their first conference win of the season as they beat St. Joe’s 1-0 on the road on Saturday.

Following a scoreless first half, Rhody quickly earned a corner kick in the 47th minute. The kick, taken by third-year Lauren MacDonald, was attempted to be cleared by the St. Joe’s defense, but it was intercepted by URI. That interception led to a cross from fifth-year Mie Carstensen finding fourth-year McKenna Sylvester inside the box for the lone goal of the game.
