Stress-relief event draws crowd amid finals prep

The Residence Hall Association helped a long line of students, reaching the end of Hope Commons, de-stress with a Snow Much Fun event at Pizza Express on Nov. 20.

The RHA wanted to bring the University of Rhode Island community together, according to fourth-year Inaya Arroyo. With finals coming up, students were encouraged to take a break from the stress by attending their event.

The event included a Stuff-a-Squishy kit, which included an outline of a plushie and stuffing material, a hot chocolate bar with a hot chocolate machine and the option of whipped cream and decorating cookies. Residents lined up, reaching the end of the Hope Commons exit, as they waited to enter. After 15 minutes, supplies ran out, leaving some students unable to participate.

RHA members directed the line of students, while handing out plushie sets. When supplies ran out, nearly half the people in the line were only able to receive cookies. For students who were able to get plushies, they hung out to stuff them, filling the entire room.

“I hate seeing people’s faces when they’re sad and we have nothing left,” Arroyo said. “But it also lets us know that people do come to our events and we just need more supplies, so it’s a good thing.”

The event was targeted at first and second-year students who live on campus, according to Moorea Santulli, a second-year student and treasurer of the RHA. The RHA wanted to host something fun for students who don’t have cars and make sure they enjoy their time at URI.

While they ran out of supplies when there was still a line, the event had a successful turnout and they plan to host one again next year, according to Santulli.

RHA offers a community for students, according to Hailey Daniels, a first-year student, who attended the event. She said they create a friendly and welcoming environment for students who need a break from schoolwork, and the group’s events are inviting and help students get involved on campus.

“It’s a very nice way to get out of your room and take a break from school,” Daniels said.
