Women’s lacrosse preparing for second-ever season

The University of Rhode Island women’s lacrosse team is preparing to begin its second season in program history on Saturday against Fairfield University.

The Rams had their inaugural season last year and debuted with an 11-10 win against Merrimack College.

Rhode Island finished the season with an 8-8 overall record and went 4-6 in conference play. Now the Rams are set to begin their next chapter in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

“I’m really proud of what we did last year,” URI Women’s Lacrosse Head Coach Jenna Slowey said. “To come out 8-8, and one win away from making the conference tournament, we are really proud of that.”

On Nov. 17, 2025,  Slowey announced her decision on captains for this season: fifth-year attacker Caitlin Dellecave, fifth-year midfielder Kyndall Jackson, fourth-year defender Marissa Hermans and fourth-year midfielder Emma Hughes.

“We have been doing a lot of game-like scenarios,” Slowey said. “We are trying to get the game-like feel as much as we can.”

It was announced this Friday that third-year attacker Caralie Basuel was named to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference Team. She finished second on the team with 48 goals and 56 points last season.

“I think for me, the momentum and energy is all brought by the girls around me,” Basuel said. “Having these girls around me, my best friends, will give me and all of us the energy to bring into the season together.”

Basuel has also received a lot of praise from the coaches and teammates around her.

“Caralie is the best player on the field,” Slowey said. “She is really stepping into a leadership role this season.”

Basuel dominated as a freshman and aims to bring last year’s experience into this season as one of the voices of the team.

The women’s lacrosse program is the newest Division I sport at URI. Slowey and her team are doing what they can to make themselves stand out.

Rhode Island has brought in 11 new faces to the program, continuing to grow at a rapid rate.

The Rams were fueled by a high-powered offense last season, averaging over 12 goals per game.

Due to renovations at Meade Stadium, URI will be calling two different locations home this season. The Rams’ first four home games will take place at Beirne Stadium, on the campus of Bryant University. The final four home games will be taking place on campus at the URI Soccer Complex.

The season opener against Fairfield will be live on ESPN+ this Friday at 2 p.m. They will also face the University of New Hampshire on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Smithfield.
