Women’s Basketball

FINAL (2/18): URI 69-39 Fordham University 

FINAL (2/25): University of Richmond 72-46 URI 

The Rams fought through a slow start to take down Fordham on senior day at the Ryan Center on Saturday afternoon. Rhode Island went on an 11-0 run in the second quarter to take the lead from Fordham. First-year Aimée Michel scored the team’s first three-pointer to give URI a 10-point lead going into halftime. Rhode Island dominated the rest of the way, outscoring Fordham 25-11 in the final quarter of the game to give the Rams a 30-point victory on senior day. 

Despite Saturday’s victory, Rhode Island lost its second meeting of the season to Richmond on Wednesday. Richmond’s deep range success carried its win, shooting an overwhelming 53.3% from three-point range. For more, read Michael Petraske’s recap (rhodycigar.com).

Men’s Basketball

FINAL (2/21): La Salle University 59-46 URI

Rhode Island fell short to La Salle on Saturday afternoon. The Rams started strong with a 7-1 run, but the Explorers responded immediately with a 12-0 run. The Explorers built up a 39-25 lead going into halftime, while the Rams shot 20% from beyond the arc in the first half. Early into the second half, the Explorers’ lead got to 18. While the Rams were able to cut the deficit to six, La Salle was able to keep the Rams at a safe distance for the remainder of the game. For more, read Abby LePage’s recap (rhodycigar.com).  

Men’s Track and Field

Brown Invitational (2/21)

In the Rams’ last meet before the Atlantic 10 Championship, only a small number of participants attended the Brown Invitational on Saturday afternoon. First-year Cam Miller cleared a personal best 2.05 meters to win his event. Rolling in the pole vault, Rhode Island took the top three spots, led by first-year Carson Dean. Women’s Track and Field

Brown Invitational (2/21)

Rhode Island finished out its regular season Saturday at the Brown Invitational. URI sent a small group for one final chance to receive qualifying marks for the indoor championship meets. Fifth-year Kayla Clark placed second in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.78 seconds. For more, read Marco Campopiano’s recap (rhodycigar.com). 

Women’s Lacrosse 

FINAL (2/21): Bryant University 15-6 URI

Rhode Island lost to Bryant University on Saturday afternoon. Second-year Kate Cumins led the Rams with four goals, while third-years Caralie Basuel and Calli Dunn each contributed a goal. Bryant responded accordingly by scoring timely runs in each quarter to give them control. The ultimate dagger was seven second-half goals for the Bulldogs, pulling away in the fourth quarter to give them the 15-6 win over the Rams. For more, read Owen Reilly’s recap (rhodycigar.com).

Swim and Dive

Atlantic 10 Championship (2/18-21): Seventh of 10 teams

Rhode Island’s relay set a program record at the Atlantic 10 Championship on Wednesday. URI’s team of first-year Molly Beckwith, second-year Avery Potyrala, second-year Mary McCormick and fourth-year Rylee Kelly scored a time of 7:23.21 in the 800-yard freestyle relay, setting a new URI record. 

Highlights from the rest of the weekend included a third-place podium from fourth-year Olivia Winslow in the three-meter dive, a second-place medal for Beckwith in the 200-yard freestyle and another third-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke for third-year Logan Norrid. Women’s Tennis

FINAL (2/21): Brown University 7-0 URI

Rhode Island lost its second-straight match, being swept by Brown on Saturday afternoon. The Rams were beaten in straight sets in five of their six singles matches. For more, read Abby LePage’s recap (rhodycigar.com). 

Baseball 

FINAL (2/20): University of Alabama 19-4 URI (7 inn.)

FINAL (2/21): Alabama 5-8 URI 

FINAL (2/21): Alabama 11-1 URI (8 inn.)

Rhode Island dropped its first game in the opening series against Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Friday evening. The Rams fought through the fifth inning with a three-run home run from third-year Reece Moroney to chip away at their deficit. The Tide responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame to pull away. 

The Rams plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh from first-year Jayden Tolentino’s second home run of the game to cut Alabama’s lead to one, but inevitably came up short in game two. 

Alabama scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to finish off its 11-1 win over Rhode Island in the final game of the series. For more, read Ryan McKenna’s recap (rhodycigar.com). 

Softball

FINAL (2/20): URI 2-1 Tennessee Tech University (8 inn.)

FINAL (2/20): URI 3-0 Eastern Kentucky University

FINAL (2/21): Georgia Southern University 2-1 URI (5 inn.)

Third-year Riley Frickleton lifted a sacrifice fly to score fourth-year Hannah Hernandez in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Rhode Island its second walk-off victory of the season over Tennessee Tech. 

Fourth-year Ashley Hibbard pitched six shutout innings for Rhode Island to win its second game of the day, knocking off Eastern Kentucky. 

Rhode Island dropped a weather-shortened contest at Georgia Southern, falling 2-1 in five innings Saturday afternoon. For more, read Chase Abrams’ recap (rhodycigar.com).
