Softball can’t string together wins, but still takes three victories in six-game week

The University of Rhode Island’s softball team went 3-3 over six games to begin a long homestand.

A three-game series against the University of Dayton, two games against the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and a single game against Bryant University spanned the week.

The Rams started with Dayton on Friday in a doubleheader, splitting the day 1-1 before losing on Saturday.

The first game was lost by the Rams 5-1. The scoring started in the second inning, where Dayton hit a grand slam to take a 4-0 lead. The Flyers then scored another run in the fourth, making it 5-0.

The Rams had no answer as they posted one single run in the sixth on a single from fourth-year Becca Zawistowski while having only three hits all game.

The Rams won the second game of the doubleheader 6-3 thanks to a big second inning. All six runs were posted in the second from Rhody.

Third-year Riley Frickleton started the scoring with an RBI single down the right field line. The bats kept rolling as second-year Julianne Torres had an RBI single.

Zawistowski smoked a three-RBI double to right center. Third-year Rayah Snyder wrapped up the scoring in the second with an RBI single up the middle, making it 6-0. Dayton answered in the fourth inning, scoring one, and in the sixth inning, scoring two, but it wasn’t enough.

Rhody fell short in Saturday’s game, 8-2. Dayton came out hot with the bats, scoring at least one run in the first four innings while Rhody scored none.

After four, the Rams were down 8-0. The Rams put up two runs in the fifth, but that was all. A two-run home run from fourth-year catcher Kylie Bulinski gave the Rams both runs.

Flipping the script to UMass Lowell on Tuesday. Rhody split the doubleheader, winning the first game but losing the second.

The Rams bats were alive in the first game, winning 11-3 with a huge seven-run sixth inning to seal the deal.

UMass Lowell scored three in the second inning, coming out to a strong 3-0 lead. The Rams answered quickly in the third inning, tying the game at three apiece. Frickleton’s single to left center scored one, followed by Bulinski’s double to right center, which scored two. Another run came in the fourth thanks to a single to right center from second-year Giuliana Ialongo, giving Rhody a one-run lead through four innings.

The seven-run sixth shut the door to seal the win. Second-year pitcher Brooke Gerry threw all six innings with 10 strikeouts, limiting UMass Lowell to only three runs.

The Rams got shut out in the second game, losing 2-0. Despite seven hits, Rhody couldn’t get anybody home.

Rhode Island wrapped up the week with a 10-8 win over Bryant. In a back-and-forth battle, the Rams broke an 8-8 tie in the bottom of the sixth with two runs before Gerry closed it out.

The team will try to carry its momentum into its weekend series against Loyola University Chicago. Continuing their homestand, the Rams will play a doubleheader at noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday, finishing the series on Sunday at noon on ESPN+.
