The transfer portal has officially closed; here are the updates, as of April 21, regarding the University of Rhode Island men’s and women’s basketball teams.
On Monday, the news many Rhody fans were waiting for dropped. The men’s team signed its first player from the portal, fourth-year guard Dylan Williamson from Towson University. Williamson stands at 6’ 1”, averaging 14.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists last season.
Williamson got his first impression of his new teammates at the first game of the Terry’s Chocolate ESPN Events Invitational when Towson defeated URI 62-55, on Nov. 24, 2025. Williamson was the leading scorer of the game with 25 points, shooting 10-21 from the field and 5-9 from beyond the arc.
There is a reason it has been all quiet on the eastern front of the transfer portal, as the men’s team is seeing its highest roster retention in the Miller era.
It was announced on Saturday that fifth-year forward Mouhamed Sow obtained a medical waiver from the NCAA and will return to URI for his sixth season. Sow only played five games last season, averaging 6.4 points and 5.6 rebounds, before being ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Sow’s absence affected the team’s ability to grab offensive and defensive rebounds, areas in which the Rams finished eighth and last in the Atlantic 10 Conference, respectively.
Also on Monday, the team announced the return of first-year guard Barrett Loer. Loer played five games last season and averaged 1.4 points.
The only loss the men’s team has suffered so far in the portal is second-year guard Damone King, who signed with Eastern Kentucky University on Saturday.
The women’s team has yet to add anyone since last week, but first-year guard Amori Jarrett announced that she was returning to URI after previously entering the transfer portal. Jarrett was the only Ram to not appear last season as she took a redshirt season.
Four former Rams made their commitments to new schools this past week. Second-year center Albina Syla will travel across the country and play for the University of California, Berkley next season.
First-year centers Aimee Michel and Lilyana Fontcha, along with second-year guard Eva Agba, all made their official commitments to join new head coach Adeniyi Amadou at New Mexico State University after being recruited to Kingston during his time as an associate head coach.
There are now just two former Rams left in the transfer portal that have yet to commit to a new program. Second-year forward Palmire Mbu entered the portal as a graduate transfer, hoping for a waiver from the NCAA to continue her collegiate career. Second-year forward Mary-Kate Tshibuabua averaged 3.2 points last season after missing all of her first season due to injury.
Though the portal is closed, teams can still sign players to fill out their rosters. So, expect both Miller and women’s head coach Colleen Mullen to bring in more transfers as the teams fill out their rosters for next season.
