Colella and Wood collect victories in final home meet

The University of Rhode Island women’s track and field team hosted a meet at Mackal Field House on Saturday afternoon for the final time this season.

In the URI Coaches Invitational, URI won two field events and two running events, with fifth-year Megan Wood and second-year Abigail Colella each earning top finishes in their respective events. The invitational included teams from Bryant University, University of New Hampshire, College of the Holy Cross, Bentley University and others.

Before Saturday’s event, URI honored 13 members of the team in a short senior day ceremony. The seniors made their mark on the URI Coaches Invitational, with Wood earning first place in both the shot put and weight throw with personal best throws of 46’ 2” and 10’ 55’’ respectively.

“Wood had a nice meet,” Feit-Melnick said. “[It’s] nice to see our seniors doing well. [They’re] amazing student-athletes on and off the track.”

In addition, fifth-year Amyah Santana made her 500-meter season debut and finished fifth overall with a time of 1:21.18. She also anchored a 4×400-meter relay that featured Joyce London, Sydney Haik and Lily MacDonald. That team won with a seven-second advantage over second-place Stonehill College, and Haik doubled with a second-place finish in the 400m and a personal best time of 60.53 in that event.

Sophia DiMuccio finished second in the mile with a personal best time of 5:17.54 as well. Even though the mile is not her usual event, DiMuccio still thoroughly enjoyed her race and was thrilled with the result.

“Me and my coach decided it would be a good opportunity to race the mile,” DiMuccio said. “It’s kinda fun and fresh…not something I usually do.”

The Coventry, R.I. native is in her fifth year in the program and was voted a captain by her teammates at the beginning of the season. Following the team’s event to honor their seniors, DiMuccio had the chance to reflect back on her time spent at URI.

“Being here for five years and being a captain this year, it’s a totally different perspective than when I was a freshman,” DiMuccio said. “I’ve learned so much. I think this team…has developed me so much into the person I am today.”

The Rams got more standout performances throughout the meet. Colella won the 400m with a personal best time of her own at 59.40. The team also had top-five finishes from Olivia Skapczynski in the 1000-meter, Allison Vigue in the pole vault, MacDonald in the high jump, Kiley Mironenko in the triple jump and Alyssa Yankee’s personal best in the shot put. Kayla Clark and MacDonald placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles.

Coming up, the Rams will send a group of runners to Boston University to compete in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday. The start time is set for 2 p.m.
