Well, it’s official – the Buffalo Bills are playing their last season at Highmark Stadium before moving across the street to play in the new building in 2026.
As a member of the Bills Mafia, also known as their fanbase, I’m excited for the team, as new additions will be made to improve the fan experience. To combat Buffalo’s complicated weather, a canopy and heated seats will be added to keep fans safe from high winds and snow that comes during the winter.
I’ve never been to a home game, but if I do go, I know I’ll have a great time soaking in all of the improvements. I remember streaming a snowy Bills game, and fans were throwing snowballs in the air every time we scored a touchdown or field goal. I think I would’ve joined in the fun if I were there.
While watching, I found the ruckus lighthearted and funny because that is what the Bills Mafia is known for. However, it got to a point where the field almost became unplayable, and it almost cost penalties on the Bills. The game couldn’t continue unless the fans stopped.
That’s where I draw the line of being part of the Mafia. We can be crazy and show our love for the team, but this is one time where it can be too much. So, I hope the canopy, which covers the top of the building, helps prevent snow from coming down toward the fans and only the field.
Besides the Mafia’s behavior, the stadium will have a smaller capacity with 62,000 seats, according to Democrat & Chronicle, compared to our current stadium, which has 71,608 seats. If this is meant to enhance the fan experience will middle and working class fans be able to go along with current season ticket holders?
The 2025 ticket prices for a game average from $96 to $300, according to Vivid Seats. Since prices are high, it’s still difficult to get tickets for lower-class fans. In fact, the Bills are struggling to sell Personal Seat Licenses for the new stadium, according to BroBible. While this doesn’t give a straight answer, it means it’s too soon to tell if ticket prices will be cheaper.
When the current season ends, the building will be demolished and turned into a parking lot with more spots and space for tailgating, according to wyrk.com. Demolition is said to begin in March 2027. Terry Pegula, the owner of the Buffalo Bills, rumored the current stadium will be turned into a music venue, according to the article.
Whatever new memories will be made in the upcoming stadium, it’s important to remember the previous moments since 1970. At the current stadium, there have been record-breaking memories made, according to buffalobills.com. These include former quarterback Jim Kelly’s passes to former wide receiver Andre Reed and former defensive end Bruce Smith’s sacks.
Yes, I know we haven’t won a Super Bowl, but our current players have proved themselves worthy of getting there. In fact, last season, we won all 10 of our home games, so I call this progress.
As Taylor Swift said, “hold on to the memories, they will hold on to you.”
