The University of Rhode Island student senate voted to cut the monthly president’s meetings to once a semester and approved a funding transfer for the URI Alpine Ski and Snowboard Racing Team.

Cultural Affairs Committee Chair Kairy Gonzalez spoke to an incident involving the URI Republicans Instagram account. Comments made by the club’s Instagram account were posted on @rhodeislandracismwatchdog, another Instagram account dedicated to “patrolling Rhode Island for signs of racism since 2021.” Gonzalez assured senators that the senate and university administration are discussing a path forward and the issue is being prioritized.

The senate approved a bylaw amendment that would cut the amount of president’s meetings for each semester from monthly to once a semester. The Student Organization Committee previously held monthly meetings for club presidents to discuss various aspects of club operations. The SOC hopes that fewer meetings will increase attendance.

The senate also approved a budget change, rearranging funding within the URI Alpine Ski and Snowboard Racing Team. The club did not receive any new funding.

The senate ended the meeting with a “pass the gavel” ceremony for the departure of Sen. Andrew Ebrahimpour from student senate.
