Four seasons, four types of flings and two people who are together for no romantic reason, how did they meet in the first place?
In March 2025, I was doing homework in Coddington Hall’s common room for a change of scenery rather than my dorm room. As I was working, a few people passed by, and I said hello to each of them instinctively.
Little did I know that one greeting would turn into something bigger.
The last one, a guy with brown hair, brown eyes and a soft face, returned to ask, “Can you play a dumb blonde?” At first, I was caught off guard, but I decided, “Time to put my three years of high school theater to work.”
The “dumb blonde” character was part of a song called “My Best” for his upcoming band called Nylon Yen. The song is about leaving home to pursue a life in Hollywood as a musician. The dumb blonde tells the musician that he has her full support, but she misses him.
He was a music major who played the saxophone and was also in another band, ColorTV.
A musician and journalist, “What a perfect pair, right?” Two people who understand how busy life can get and share stories.
Wrong- once he showed me the demo, his cheeks turned pink, and you can guess what happened next. It turned out he liked me, but didn’t want a relationship because he was focused on becoming famous.
At the time, I thought, “Okay, we could be friends with benefits.” It had been five months since I broke up with my last boyfriend and I missed having a connection, and this musician was my type.
We continued our not-relationship by texts. He told me when he had gigs and was recording sessions, as I told him about the articles I was writing. We’d then schedule our clandestine meetings.
This system worked for almost two weeks until things got weird. I forgot exactly what I said, but I might have come off a little strong over text when trying to get his attention. It led to an in-person conversation where we officially ended things.
Looking back, I realized he was in the wrong. How could I trust someone whose dream is to become famous? If I’ve learned anything, fame comes with a price. To quote Freya Skye, “So you can play the golden boy, and lose yourself in all the noise.”
The whole fling left a bad taste in my mouth until I finally forgot about him. However, the memories came back when I found out one of his songs, “I Love You Now,” was the top song on my 2025 Spotify Wrapped.
What I’ve learned: Spring flings never lead to anything, but live in your mind forever.
