Students gathered to learn self defense skills at a workshop hosted by P.I.N.K Women on April 7 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., for all women and students who are eager to learn more about how to protect themselves and understand what personal safety is.
“I’m here to support women and learn about self defense and how it fits ourselves,” Third-year student Iliana Bentias said. “I think this is very important because with everything going on in the world, women don’t feel safe in the space that we’re in.”
P.I.N.K taught participants one-on-one defense and well as other defense tactics while growing together as a community learning important skills to protect themselves and others.
“I think self defense is important, not only for women but for everyone.” Third-year student Alicia Serrano, women’s awareness chair for P.I.N.K, said. “I feel like it’s so important to not only feel safe in your own body, but feel like if you ever need to protect yourself that you know what to do.”
The event was not only for women, but for all genders to come learn self defense strategies to be able to protect themselves if necessary, according to Serrano.
P.I.N.K Women, established at URI in 2006, invites students to get a sense of belonging, leadership and to help them grow personally and professionally.
