Student Senate Report: 2/10

The University of Rhode Island’s Student Senate began their meeting discussing the recognition of a returning organization, Slam Poetry Club. Slam Poetry is an organization seeking students to create, share and talk about poetry. They meet weekly to recite poetry and do creative writing enhancement exercises. “

We’re trying to cultivate a very safe environment in which people feel comfortable coming to because poetry is a very vulnerable art,” said the club’s representative, “we ask that they share themselves…it’s a very weird bonding experience to get to know someone through their writing.”

Slam Poetry Club was voted on and approved to be a funded student organization.

Another group, The Rhode Island Society of Wetland Scientists, came to seek recognition as an unfunded organization. The organization is seeking to provide a place for undergraduates and graduates to discuss and share information and research in the wetland science field. The organization also hopes to help with fellowships, internships, graduate school applications and job searches. Student Senate voted in favor of approving The Rhode Island Society of Wetland Scientists to be an unfunded student organization.

Student Senate ended their meeting by reminding everyone that the quest for a new Vice President of Student Affairs is still underway. More candidates will be arriving to give talks on Thursday and Friday. URI will also be hosting a forum in which students can weigh in on their opinions of the candidates.
