Silent dancing through the night

A growing nightlife trend, a silent party is an event where there is music but not in a way that’s expected. The Silent Party will be coming to the University of Rhode Island Memorial Union Atrium on Friday, April 6 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. There are two disk jockeys at the party playing music but they are playing it through wireless headphones that everyone wears. Each DJ will be playing different kinds of music, one will be playing Hip-Hop and Pop and the other will be playing Reggae and Dancehall music. Your headphones will light up a certain color depending on the channel you are listening to, making it easy to coordinate what style of music to listen to with others.

The event is being hosted by the Cape Verdean Student Association, or the CVSA. The CVSA is a multicultural organization with the sole purpose of promoting the welfare and culture of Cape Verde. CVSA organizes many different community service events as well as different social events and team bonding exercises for themselves.

Blessing Gbemisola ‘18 is the president of CVSA. She brought the idea to URI after she went to a silent party in New York. She had so much fun that she felt it would be a grand idea to bring here to URI. When the idea was brought to the school executives, they were extremely supportive. When asked about the toughest aspect of planning events, Blessing lamented that it’s tough to get people to show up.

“You can bring a horse to the water but you can’t force it to drink,” said Blessing. However, she is very pleased to have people come out to the events and have fun.

This entire week has been CVSA week where they held all kinds of different events throughout the week including different talent shows and open discussions. The Silent Party concludes CVSA week.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for the Silent Party. For URI students, advance tickets are $5 and general advance tickets are $7. Tickets can also be bought the night of the event; the price for URI students would be $7 and the price for general tickets would be $10. Don’t miss out on this chance to experience a really cool and fun event planned by the CVSA.
