The 11th annual Christiane Amanpour Lecture series organized by the University of Rhode Island’s Harrington School of Communication and Media will host Carole Radziwill on Oct. 24.
Radziwill is a three time Emmy Award winning international journalist, a best-selling author and a cast member of the hit reality TV show, “The Real Housewives of New York.”
“This year we’re bringing in Radziwill because she is a multi-faceted, extremely talented person who traverses the various areas of journalism and represents that convergence in the communication and media field,” Adam Roth, director of the Harrington School said. “She can also relate well to a younger audience with her dynamic work in the field of journalism.”
Over the last decade, this lecture series has featured Pulitzer Prize winner C.J. Chivers; the President of Reuters News, Stephen Adler; Veteran War reporter, H.D.S Greenway and many other world-renowned journalists and media personalities.
“For us, the critical thing is to give students an opportunity to hear from people who practice serious journalism,” John Pantalone, chairman of the Journalism Department said. “The lecture has always been about providing some insight to students about what it’s like to cover stories in foreign countries and what you have to do to prepare yourself for that kind of work.”
Carole Radziwill has reported and produced various stories for ABC’s “World News Tonight,” “20/20,” “Peter Jennings Reporting” and “Profiles from the Frontline.” She has traveled to countries such as India, Haiti and Cambodia, reporting and documenting stories on pivotal topics such as abortion, war and gun control. She is acclaimed for documenting the genocide under the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, and was also stationed in Israel during the Persian Gulf war to document the after effects of Saddam Hussein’s SCUD missile attacks. She received Emmy and Peabody awards for producing a story of a Vietnam Veteran’s anti-landmine campaign in Cambodia.
Radziwill’s skillset extends beyond reporting. In 2005, she wrote and published a memoir named “What Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship and Love,” which made it to the New York Times best-selling list. She is also the author of “The Widow’s Guide to Sex & Dating,” and wrote monthly columns for the Glamour Magazine in a series titled “Lunch Date,” where she interviewed former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Alec Baldwin, Antonio Banderas, Harry Connick. Jr and many more.
Adding to her television fame and success, in 2011, Radziwill also starred as a regular cast member in the reality TV drama, “Real Housewives of New York,” for six seasons.
“Christiane Amanpour will be offering a recorded introduction to the lecture,” Roth said. “There will be a media question and answer session before the lecture and a dinner following that, with 30 students, and probably even Richard Harrington. There will also be a book signing that will follow the talk.”
The lecture series was endowed by and named after the world-renowned foreign correspondent and 1995 URI alumna, Christiane Amanpour. Tickets to this event are free to the general audience but must be registered online.
