Why Do I Go to URI?

Rhody Rhody Rhody! RAMS RAMS RAMS! But why? Why did I pick the University of Rhode Island? As a first-generation college student, picking the right school was extremely important.

Never did I think that I was going to stay in-state for college until I was informed about the Talent Development (TD) Program through URI. The TD Program’s mission is to recruit and serve Rhode Island high school graduates with college potential who come from historically disadvantaged backgrounds, a majority of whom are students of color.

Since I am a female student of color and a first-generation student, I was given the opportunity to take part in the Summer Success Program for TD, which I completed this past summer. Through TD, I knew I made the right choice of coming to the University of Rhode Island.

I knew from the start that I wanted to go to a very diverse school, where I knew I would fit in, and me being here at URI feels just like home. I chose URI for the diversity and inclusivity the campus brings. With that, I also chose URI due to the affordability and the financial aid I was awarded with scholarships and grants. I genuinely believe and feel like I made the right choice of choosing URI.
