Hit or Miss: 2021 Met Gala

The 2021 Met Gala offered many different fashionable looks to either admire or question. PHOTO CREDIT: People.com

The Met Gala was on Monday, which means it’s time to admire, or question, what everyone wore.

The theme of this year’s gala was American Independence, and the event was co-chaired by singer Billie Ellish, tennis player Naomi Osaka, actor Timothée Chalamet and poet Amanda Gorman. I personally feel like there isn’t much you can’t wear at the Met Gala; you can go as classic or as extravagant as you want to, and I love seeing everyone’s looks. Dressing up is so much fun and I can’t imagine the excitement of being a part of this major event. So, here’s my take on some of the best outfits, and those that didn’t quite work, at the 2021 Met Gala.

Let’s start it off with three of my personal five-star picks from the night. These individuals’ outfits shined above the rest and were absolutely breathtaking. First up is Kendall Jenner. Janner looked stunning in her Givenchy sheer dress, which was covered in diamonds and topped off with a thick diamond choker to match. Her hair was in a simple bun and the whole look really worked. Five stars for sure go to Kendall Jenner.

Another one of my five-star picks is 66-year-old supermodel Iman. Her dress, a collaboration by Dolce & Gabbana and Harris Reed, was nothing short of incredible and her headpiece made it even more iconic. She was decked out from head to toe in feathers and gold, making her look like she was glowing. She definitely had one of the most memorable looks of the night.

My last five-star pick goes to Billie Eilish. She simply looked like a princess in her gown designed by Oscar de la Renta. I love long dresses with a little poof, so I was a huge fan of Eilish’s look. She wore a blush pink dress with a long train.

As for my three four-star picks, the first goes to Little Nas X. This four-star rating goes to Little Nas X because he rocked not one, not two, but three outfits designed by Donatella Versace. His first was a long gold cloak with a long train behind him. He removed his cape to reveal a gold suit of armor and his last outfit was a fitted gold jumpsuit. He would have gotten a high rating from me with just one of those outfits, so all three definitely deserve some praise.

The second four-star review goes to Tessa Thompson, who absolutely crushed it wearing Iris Van Herpen. She wore a dress with a beautifully designed dark red bottom and a really unique top. Her makeup perfectly matched the dress and her long black boots. One of my favorite looks of the night.

The final four-star rating goes to Jennifer Hudson, who wore an all-red dress with a red cloak of sorts covering it. The dress, designed by AZ Factory, flared out at the bottom and had a very long train, which I think was a really special touch. She finished off the look with a red lip and her hair in a simple high bun.

Getting towards the middle of the scale, my three-star ratings go to Justin and Hailey Beiber, Emma Chamberlain, Jennifer Lopez and host Timothée Chalamet. The Biebers went with the simple all-black look and sometimes simple is better. Hailey’s outfit was designed by Saint Laurent while Justin’s was by his own label, Drew House. I did like their sleek outfits, but I thought they both could have done a little more.

Chamberlain rocked a mini gold Louis Vuitton dress with some interestings cutouts and a really beautiful pattern that I loved. The only minor complaint I have about this dress is the super long side. Some people on social media loved it, but I wasn’t a huge fan. Other than that, I think that her whole look is amazing and her hair and makeup looked flawless as well.

J. Lo showed up in a really unique “cowgirl” looking outfit by Ralph Lauren, which felt very western-themed. The cowboy hat and the thick leather choker were showstopping, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the jacket she wore and thought that it distracted from her outfit slightly.

Lastly, we have Timothée Chalamet, styled in an all-white tux by Haider Ackermann, finished off with a pair of converse. When I first saw this look, I really liked it. Then I started to read online that some people thought it gave chef vibes and now I can’t unsee it.

Our last group is made up of those that I think missed the mark just a bit. Let’s start off with Madison Beer. I think she usually wears beautiful outfits and her Met Gala outfit was stunning on her, but I felt as though she could have done more for this event. She wore a green gown by One/Of by Patrcia Voto with some sequins on the sides, which reminded me a bit of a prom dress. Again, she looked gorgeous, but I was expecting something a bit different for the Met Gala.

Next up, we have Kim Petras, who wore a dress by Collina Stradaa and arrived with a horse head right smack dab in the middle of her chest. I give her points for uniquenesses, but I find the giant horse head just a tad bit creepy.

Another person we obviously have to discuss is Kim Kardashian. I still don’t really know where I stand on this look, and it seems like a lot of people are in the same boat. She walked the carpet with Demna Gvasalia, the creative designer of Balenciaga (not soon-to-be ex-husband Kanye West as some speculated) in a tight, all black outfit that covered every inch of her but her hair. This was definitely an interesting choice and there are a lot of rumors going around as to why she made it, especially as it is not the usual Kim Kardashian Met Gala look.

I could go on and on about all the outfits. There are always ones that steal the show and others that don’t quite do as well. Regardless, it was so fun to see everyone together again exploring fashion.
