Podcast recommendations across genres to get you listening

Chances are, if I’m doing anything and not listening to music, I’m listening to a podcast. My old work and school commutes, as well as the almost-two-hour drive home made me try out a bunch of different podcasts, but there are so many out there! It can be hard to know where and what to start with, so here are my tried and true podcasts that cover a few different genres that will hopefully interest you.

For my true crime junkies, I recommend “Your Own Backyard,” which focuses on the case of Kristin Smart, a girl who vanished from California Polytechnic State University at the end of her freshman year in 1996 and was never found. I had never heard of this case until this podcast came up on my recommendation list. My favorite part is that updates are happening to the case in real time. It’s very satisfying to see that investigative journalism of any kind, such as the work done by host Chris Lambert, can actually help bring progress. The podcast is credited as resparking national attention towards the case and reigniting investigation efforts.

If you would prefer small bites of stories instead of a podcast series, the classic and arguably most well-known in the genre, “Crime Junkie,” is always a good place to start. The podcast has been around for years, so you have plenty of options of cases to choose from.

If you prefer your podcasts to not be so dark, I get it.

My all-time holy grail podcast is “Chicks in the Office,” a pop culture podcast created by Barstool Sports. Now, don’t let the words “Barstool Sports” turn you away; it basically never talks about sports. Hosted by Ria and Fran, they have episodes come out every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with the Wednesday episode normally talking about the “Bachelor” franchise. They get great interviews ranging from “Bachelor” contestants and Real Housewives to the Jonas Brothers, and they were some of the first people to interview the “Outer Banks” cast. Listening to this podcast might make you the pop culture expert of your friends, and only you have to know it will all be because of this podcast.

If you like history and/or pop culture, my favorite is “Even the Rich,” a podcast which has a miniseries that focuses on multiple famous rich people throughout the years, such as the Kardashians, the Kennedys and even members of the British Royal Family. It is incredibly well made and makes you feel like you are in the history of the stories that you are listening to. The banter between the hosts Brooke Siffrinn & Aricia Skidmore-William, mixed with the fascinating backgrounds behind some of the most well-known people out there is just chef’s kiss.

Don’t forget to check out our own podcast “Our Five Cents,” available on all podcast-listening platforms to keep you updated about what’s going on at the University of Rhode Island in small audio format in case you’re more of a listener than a reader. Happy listening!
