Field of Screams: A thrilling, haunted experience

If you’re looking to get spooky this Halloween, Field of Screams, located in West Greenwich, is the perfect place to start.

Before last week, I had never even heard of this haunted house, but after going there with my sorority, I think it deserves more hype.

Located about 30 minutes away from the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus, Field of Screams features a Circus-themed haunted maze, the “Dungeon of Doom” and a haunted forest.

When we first arrived, I was immediately spooked. Tucked away in the woods, the secluded area was decked out with haunted attractions such as a zombie shooting range, a concession stand with themed snacks, including their popular “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” hotdog, in addition to props for photo-ops. After guests take advantage of these not-so-scary attractions, they’re able to jump in line for the haunted house.

Because I went with such a large group of girls, my friends and I were in line for about an hour. However, I feel like this is the case any time you go to an attraction like this. Now that it’s Hallo-week, and this is the last week the haunted house will be open for the season, I wouldn’t be surprised if the wait times increase.

Waiting in line wasn’t all that boring. My friends and I were greeted by one of the workers. The actor tried to jump-scare everyone in line, but it turned me off from the experience. Not only was he acting silly, but we could also see his eyes peeking out from his Freddy Krueger mask.

Obviously, I don’t expect haunted houses like this to be ultra-realistic, but having that experience lowered my expectations for the rest of what was to come.

However, the haunted house redeemed itself as soon as I stepped inside.

My three friends and I were screaming at every turn due to the unsettling light effects and that chased out of the house while he revved his chainsaw.

Following this, we had to wait in a short line again, but we got to spend time with a Pennywise lookalike before we entered the Cirque Du Souls.

A creepy old woman greeted us and handed us glasses, which we had to wear to experience the full psychedelic effect of the next attraction. Not only was the house filled with clowns, but 3D images were popping out at us for the entirety of the second attraction. sounds, along with the jump scares. However, what really terrified us at this house was the man

Being shorter than the first, we exited the Cirque Du Souls and finally got to enter our final destination, The Haunted Forest. This last attraction felt eerier than the others because rather than being trapped in a confined area, we were out in the open where there was plenty of room for scarers to hide.

As we were exiting The Haunted Forest, I didn’t realize the experience had come to an end until I saw the concession stand. At this point, I was having a good time and I was disappointed it only lasted around 40 minutes.

We had waited in line for longer than we were in the attraction, and as somebody who usually goes to haunted houses at this time of the year, I couldn’t help but be sad. However, all of the girls I was with were not only satisfied with the trip, but terrified as well.

Even though I wouldn’t say this is the best haunted house I’ve ever been to, I would say that little Rhody did pretty well at “bringing nightmares to life” at Field of Screams.

Sunday is the last night that this attraction will be open, so buy your tickets here if you’re ready to upgrade your Halloween plans.
