Men’s Basketball

FINAL (2/7): URI 82-77 University of Richmond

FINAL (2/10): George Washington University 75-70 URI

Rhode Island won a wire-to-wire game against Richmond on Saturday to get back into the win column. In a back-and-forth game that had a lot of fouling, the Rams shot a season high 42 free throws from the line. The Spiders led 34-33 at halftime, but Rhode Island fought back. Seventh-year guard Tyler Cochran made 15 of 17 from the line alone, scoring a career high 34 points alongside 10 rebounds for the double-double.

Rhode Island fell below .500 in conference play with a loss to George Washington on Tuesday night. The Revolutionaries got out to a dominating start, as they took control and led Rhode Island 34-18 at halftime. The Rams outscored the Revolutionaries 52-41 in the second half and got contributions from Cochran, who had 24 points, and sixth-year guard Myles Corey, who had 20 points, but that would not be enough. Women’s Basketball

FINAL (2/8): URI 74-43 Saint Louis University

FINAL (2/11): URI 85-42 Virginia Commonwealth University

Rhode Island cruised to a 74-43 win against Saint Louis on Sunday to extend its winning streak to 15 straight. After a slow start, trailing Saint Louis 10-2 early on, the Rams grabbed momentum and never looked back. They outscored the Billikens 42-18 in the paint. Third-year guard Sophia Vital added 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals, as second-year center Albina Syla had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. 

Rhode Island ran away with an 85-42 victory on Wednesday against VCU to move to 13-0 in conference play and 22-2 overall. The Rams took control from the tip and never looked back, ending the first quarter up 29-6. The Rams held VCU to single digits in the first and third quarters, and first-year guard Vanessa Hariss led the way with 16 points. For more, read Abby LePage’s recap (page 7, rhodycigar.com). 

Men’s Track and Field

IC4A Indoor Championship (2/7 -2/8): First of 20 teams

Rhode Island beat out Saint Joseph’s University and Brown University among 17 other teams on Saturday and Sunday to secure its third straight IC4A Championship. Some of the top finishers for the Rams were fifth-year Matt Santy, who won the high jump after clearing 2.16 meters, first-year Miles Lipka, who won the heptathlon with 5,235 points, fifth-year Joachim Ennoo, who won the triple jump, marking 15.71 meters and first-year Lucas Andrade, who won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.94 seconds. Women’s Track and Field

River Hawk Invitational (2/6) 

ECAC Championships (2/7)

Rhode Island competed in the River Hawk Invitational on Friday and the ECAC Championships on Saturday. Some of the top finishers on Friday’s invitational were second-year Macy Daigle, who finished first in the high jump at 5 ‘5”, and the 4×400-meter relay team, which came in second on the day. 

On Saturday, Rhode Island sent its pole vaulters to compete at Boston University, where they had first-year Sarah Shipton and third-year Olivia Priest tie for 12th, clearing 11’ 2.25”. For more, read Chase Abrams’ recap (rhodycigar.com). 

Swim and Dive

Boston Winter Open (2/6-2/7)

On the first day of the Boston Winter Open, second-year Ella Arbeiter recorded her fastest time of the season in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:04.81, good enough to get her third place out of fourteen entrants. On Saturday, first-year Chloe Robinson finished fourth out of 25 competitors in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.47 seconds. The Rams placed in all three top spots in the 1650-yard freestyle. Rhode Island was led by Arbeiter, who finished in 17:46.01. Behind her was first-year Meghan Pauley with a time of 17:57.74, and in third was third-year Cate Carboni with a time of 18:01.55. Women’s Tennis

FINAL (2/7): URI 4-1 Hofstra University

FINAL (2/8): URI 7-0 Providence College

Rhode Island won its third match in a row on Saturday, knocking off Hofstra. The Rams swept their doubles matches, winning all three against the Pride. Rhode Island got victories from fourth-year Nikki Fernando, first-year Kajsa Helgesen, and first-year Miruna Scarlat in their singles matches.

Rhode Island convincingly beat Providence on Sunday with a 7-0 sweep, winning every match. The Rams won all three of their doubles matches, giving up only three games or fewer in each. It was the same result in singles. Fernanado won her 59th career doubles match, putting her in a tie for third place in program history. For more, read Benjamin Doucette’s recap (rhodycigar.com).

Women’s Lacrosse

FINAL (2/6): Fairfield University 13-6 URI

FINAL: (2/10): University of New Hampshire 9-8 URI

Rhode Island lost its season opener to Fairfield on Friday. The Stags got out to a quick 5-0 lead on the Rams and never looked back. Rhode Island made a late rally thanks to third-year Caralie Basuel, who had four goals to cut the lead to 9-6, but Fairfield was able to add four more. 

Rhode Island dropped an overtime thriller to New Hampshire on Tuesday to drop to 0-2 on the season. Basuel led Rhode Island for the second straight game with three goals in the contest, and once again, the Rams tried to rally, but came up short. Golf

UNC Greensboro Palmas Del Mar Collegiate: T-Sixth of 14 teams

Rhode Island tied for sixth place at the UNC Greensboro Palmas Del Mar Collegiate in Puerto Rico. The Rams’ biggest contributors were second-year Tyler Bruneau, second-year Luke Stennett and fourth-year Adian O’Donovan, who shot a combined -7 over the last 15 holes they played. The Rams hit a few rough patches as they were +5 on holes 12-15. Stennett shot five under over the final two days to climb 35 spots in the individual rankings.
