Sons of Liberty provides hub for local community

On Saturday, the Sons of Liberty Spirits Company hosted Arts and Eats, an event featuring over 20 local artisans, live music, food trucks and drinks.

The Sons of Liberty Spirits Company is a local brewery located in South Kingstown. Inspired by the original Sons of Liberty, the brewery preaches the act of being defiant in convention, tradition and logic according to the Sons of Liberty website.

The company often hosts events such as open mics, movie nights and even roller-skating competitions. The brewery has lots of large, open space that allows these events to take place and host many guests.

The event showcased local artisans selling merchandise like jewelry, paintings, candles and clothing. The artists showcased at the event were brought through the Rhode Island Field of Artisans, a creative platform and event production company for entrepreneurs, according to the Field of Artisans website. The Field of Artisans has a network of over 900 artisans, all based in Rhode Island.

The Arts and Eats event is just one of many events the Field of Artisans is present for at the Sons of Liberty. In the coming months, the Field of Artisans looks forward to attending the Whiskey Wonderland event on December 11th and 12th, as well as the Holiday Field Nights at Whalers Brewing Company in South Kingstown.

The event showcased the brewery’s fall drinks, draft beer, crafted cocktails and mocktails. Guests sipped drinks while exploring the stands set up throughout the brewery, listening to live music performances.

The Arts and Eats event has been an annual event for about five years now. The event serves as an advantageous opportunity for small businesses, especially those involved in some kind of craft.

The artist performing at the event was a singer and guitarist, Alexa Picillo. She performed acoustic renditions of many popular songs like “Love Story” by Taylor Swift, “Revival” by Zach Bryan and “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Attendees enjoyed every aspect, admiring the artwork presented and drinks provided, according to attendee Nikki Pears.

“It caught me because of the art,” Pears said. “And then I can drink at the same time. I’m happy.”

Pears found out about the event through a Facebook page while looking for exciting fall events to attend while visiting her friend in South Kingston.

Paul Baptista, a bar manager for the Sons of Liberty, praises the community effort in putting on the event and showing out, focusing on the importance of supporting small businesses.

“It’s just really good to see everybody in the community share their crafts and support each other,” Baptista said. “With small businesses, you’ve got to have each other’s backs.”

Baptista has worked with the Sons of Liberty for about three years, perfecting the taste of cocktails and the draft beer that the brewery produces.

The event also had several food trucks located outside of the brewery. The vendors present included Pretty in Pink, a lemonade truck that also serves specialty drinks; Shawarma Brothers, serving authentic Middle Eastern dishes and The Burrito Bowl, serving fresh and flavorful Mexican-style dishes.

The Sons of Liberty have multiple events on deck throughout the fall, providing food, drinks and entertainment.
