Wallitsch: Ocean State Eats: Village Hearth Bakery and Cafe

Tucked into the streets of Jamestown, Rhode Island lies the Village Hearth Bakery and Cafe, a restaurant that manages to maintain a cozy atmosphere despite its modern style.

The restaurant’s exterior is shrouded by the plants and trees that line the property. A humble wooden sign welcomes visitors onto the property where they are met with a plethora of outdoor seating.

Couches and chairs can be found scattered throughout the property and on the restaurant’s deck, offering visitors more privacy to enjoy their meals by themselves or with their friends. Small lights weave through the roof that covers the patio keeping it illuminated.

The interior of the restaurant has a much more modern style with the chalkboards that have the menu written on them, the light fixtures that resemble the gears inside of a clock and the white brick walls.

The restaurant’s decorations are also very minimalistic, which highlights the view of the bakery behind the counter. The restaurant sells an assortment of baked goods, breakfast foods and lunch options to patrons. Despite being a bakery, the restaurant’s other food options are on the healthier side.

For breakfast, visitors can order breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, yogurt parfaits or one of the many baked goods. I ordered a breakfast sandwich on a bagel with ham. The bagel came served on a tin tray covered in foil.

The bagel was toasted and the ham had a smoky taste to it. The eggs weren’t messy and the sandwich was easy to eat without making a mess. All of the ingredients tasted fresh.

The person I was with, second-year Geraldine Johnna Arcelay, ordered the house roast beef sandwich.

The sandwich was served on a toasted roll and had roast beef piled onto it. It also came with a healthy portion of fresh tomatoes on it.

The restaurant also has an assortment of hot and cold beverages from coffee to teas, to alcoholic beverages. I ordered a hot chocolate and it came out thick like a homemade hot chocolate should. The drink was served in a Dean’s Beans coffee cup, a business that focuses on being people-first and ecologically responsible.

One thing to note is that the restaurant is on the pricier side, however the servings are very large as well. All of the food was fresh and served promptly. I would recommend this restaurant and would eat there again.

We received our orders minutes after placing them and did not have to wait to place them, despite it being a Sunday morning. To visitors of Jamestown looking for a quick bite while exploring the area and wanting to feel full when leaving, the Village Hearth Bakery and Cafe is the place to stop.
