It’s feminine intuition: ‘drop dead’ review

Olivia Rodrigo announced her upcoming album “you seem pretty sad for a girl in love,” leaving fans wondering about what’s to come.

On the album cover,  Rodrigo chose light blue for the color instead of her signature purple. The title is a sentence instead of a capitalized four-letter word. The tracklist is 13 songs, which is an unlucky number. “SOUR” had 11 tracks and “GUTS” had 12. Based on these changes, the story might dig deeper.

The first track, “drop dead,” sticks with a smooth synth-pop baseline, with a note change between the two choruses. The tone might remind listeners of Taylor Swift’s song “Wildest Dreams,” where the story is about a character who finds love and hopes it will last forever, but holds onto the memory of what it once was.

This album will likely be the story of her breakup with actor Louis Partridge. Each of the 13 tracks is a chapter about how she and Partridge started dating and broke up after their two-year relationship.

The title suggests that Rodrigo had lingering feelings for Partridge while writing. This could be the most emotional album we’ve seen in Rodrigo’s discography so far.

“drop dead” is the first section, where Rodrigo meets Partridge and develops feelings for him as she sings: “I’ve been dropping hints all night that I’d love it if you held my hand, goddamn.”

The first two lines of the bridge, “A Pisces and a Gemini, but I think we might go really nice together,” suggest that she and Partridge would make a good couple. Rodrigo is a Pisces as her birthday is Feb. 20. Partridge’s birthday is June 3, making him a Gemini.

However, the compatibility between the two signs is low to moderate, as trust is a weak spot, according to zodiacsign.com. They deal with their emotional relationships, issues and self-image differently. Rodrigo wrote two songs about self-image issues, “pretty isn’t pretty” and “jealousy, jealousy.” As the two signs are mutable, it’s unlikely they’ll fall in love, if they do, it won’t last long like Rodrigo and Partridge, which was two years.

It was reported from multiple sources that the two began dating in October 2023, when Rodrigo met Partridge through mutual friends. As their relationship grew, Partridge was spotted at Rodrigo’s GUTS World Tour, and during one of her shows, she changed the lyrics in “so american.” The original lyrics were “But ain’t it love? I think I’m in love,” to “Are you in love? Cause I’m in love.”

The tour lasted from Feb. 24, 2024, to July 1, 2025, while the two were together until splitting up in December 2025.

As listeners wait until its official release on June 12, we will keep over-analyzing Rodrigo’s love life and the possibilities of the third album.
