“Miss Americana:” Taylor Swift Review

Taylor Swift goes from ‘nice girl’ to the ‘strong girl’ she’s always been in this new documentary

Since the beginning of her career Taylor Swift has been told how she must act like “a nice girl.” In the recent release of the Netflix documentary “Miss Americana,” Swift is told that “a nice girl doesn’t force their opinions on people; a nice girl smiles and waves and says thank you; a nice girl doesn’t make people feel uncomfortable with her views.” These statements have impacted how she has acted and the decisions that she’s made to create a girl-next-door image in the public’s eye.

However, if “Miss Americana” teaches viewers anything, it’s that if you confine yourself to who the public wants you to be you’ll lose sight of yourself.

That’s what “Miss Americana” is, a documentary that gives life advice without forcing anything upon you. The documentary covers several tough topics such as eating disorders, loneliness and sexual assault, while walking viewers through why Swift made certain decisions in life. However, this film is not one that is going to make everyone who watches it emotional.

If “Miss Americana” is anything, it is real. This documentary offers a perspective rarely seen from celebrities. Swift is honest and open while she finally gets to share her opinions, effectively breaking the mold that the public has created for her.

Now Swift doesn’t rebel or for lack of better words “ruin” her image. She instead recreates it and shows the world the strong female pop star that she’s always been. For the first time in her career, the documentary shows her fighting to share her political views in regards to women’s rights.

Her latest song “Only the Young” is introduced in the film. Now this isn’t for marketing intentions, but rather because the creation of the song marks the first point in her career where she speaks out about any political controversy.

What you’re watching is an honest look at what it’s like being a female pop star but also just a woman in general. Swift said that she had to stop looking at pictures of herself posted in the media because she would judge her appearance and would change her eating habits because of it.

The documentary includes Swift talking about when she brought her sexual assault case to court. She made a point about how she won but mainly focused on how hard it was to win even though she had seven witnesses and a photograph of the case.

While this documentary is full of support from her fans and her mom, it also reveals a lot about why Swift is who she is.

Now, this isn’t a rebellious Miley Cyrus situation after the end of her “Hannah Montana” era. “Miss Americana” is instead an opportunity for people to realize that she’s not just an “I’m going to write about all the boys I’ve dated” artist. She proves that she’s more than this.

Swift is tired of staying silent because that’s what she’s told to do. The documentary captures who she’s become in a non forceful manner. Whether you’re a fan or not you should watch “Miss Americana” on Netflix.
