The University of Rhode Island student senate appointed 12 new senators, heard from South Kingstown Town Councilman Jay Wegimont and condemned the towing practices in the Kingston Emporium during their Wednesday meeting.

Sens. Anureet Kuar, Sebastian Rosa, Emma Bigos, Chiamaka Desmond-Igbo and Alexis Danis were elected to the council after a unanimous vote. Kuar will serve as a first-year representative, Rosa will serve as an at-large representative and Bigos will serve as an off-campus representative. Desmond-Igbo and Danis will serve as representatives for the College of Nursing and College of Education, respectively.

Sens. Daniel Wheeler, Tre Hamlin, Kyanna Lin, Sokhna Faye, Bineta Konte, Terez Osborne and Sahasra Dontula were elected through an internal election, meaning they were nominated by current senators. Faye, Konte, Osborne and Dontula will serve as first-year representatives, Lin will serve as an at-large representative, Hamlin as an off-campus representative and Wheeler as a representative for the College of Pharmacy.

Wegimont encouraged students to remain in South Kingstown after graduation. Wegimont is a new member of the SK council and hopes to continue to build a connection with URI.

“We want to build a future with you,” Wegimont said. “We can build a better South Kingstown and a better Rhode Island.”

Campus Affairs Chair Cameron Hudson reported that Brookside Hall does not currently have hot water. Hudson plans to speak with the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Living Thomas Cooley over the next week if the issue is not resolved.

Hudson also reported that Brookside Hall Lot 22 will have eight new handicapped spots. He did not specify a timeline.

External Affairs Chair Arpan Singh introduced a resolution condemning the “unfair or improperly administered towing practices,” according to the senate’s agenda. The resolution cannot change the current towing practices, but publicizes the senate’s official stance. The resolution passed. Sen. Max McConville abstained from the vote.
